unior Boys make Noise at Garnet & Gold Classic

The Junior Boys Red Hawks competed in the Garnet & Gold Classic tournament at Regi-Notre Dame this past weekend - considered a highly competitive tournament with strong teams from the Kingston, Belleville and Toronto areas.

The boys would take on another Red Hawk team on Friday night - O'Neill (Oshawa). After a lack lustre first half, SF would hold their opponent to 12 second half points en route to a solid 61-36 win. The SF Hawks would shoot an incredible 14 team 3-pointers. Cal Henderson drilled 6 of his own with Brandon Wilkinson shooting another 5.

Saturday morning the Hawks would take on the host school - Regi-Notre Dame Panthers - a strong 'AAA' contender in Eastern Ontario. The Hawks were up to the challenge holding a lead the entire game. Mitchell Clemmens nailed two 3 pointers in the first half to help hold a lead heading into the third quarter where Brandon Wilkinson would take over the game - his 11 points in the third quarter alone would help build a strong lead for the Hawks. A 10 point lead in the fourth quarter seemed to guarantee our spot in the finals. A big rally from the Panthers who finally took advantage of their size erased the Hawks lead creating some big drama in the final minutes. Wilkinson would score with 20 seconds to play to bring victory to the Hawks. Dischaine Thompson (15 points) would play an amazing game at point guard scoring big baskets when his team needed it. Ben Donaldson would again star on defence for the Hawks. Score 49-48

In the Championship game saturday evening, the Hawks would face a formidable foe in the Frontenac Falcons a team with size, speed and athletic ability. It would be a big challenge for the Hawks to find defensive matchups and neutralize Frontenac's rebounding advantage.

Again the Hawks would be up to the challenge and explode out of the gates with two quick 3-pointers - almost surprising the Falcons. The Hawks would lead for 3 quarters - a great accomplishment. Unfortunately in the final quarter, the wheels would come off and Frontenac would gain the momentum scoring on the fast break, inside the key and from outside as well. The offence for the Hawks would stall as the intensity of the Falcons took over. Some emotional breakdowns from the hawks would prove costly and the game would slip away.

It was a great showing for the Red Hawks who should be proud of their play. Coach Spencer was extremely proud to have received countless compliments from other parents, coaches and fans who voiced a repeated message of how entertaining the Hawks were to watch and how impressive their defence was for a smaller team.
